Name: Reggie Mantle Door: tdm doorpass ( submissive ) Canon: Riverdale Canon Point: 4x19, " KILLING MR. HONEY. " Age: ~18 Appearance: your jacked jack-of-all-trades History: ❝ Sounds a lot like the plot of Bad Boys II. ❞ Personality:
It's true that Reggie is far from subtle, for better or worse. He can be and often is BLUNT, mean, crass, and INAPPROPRIATE, seemingly fine with saying whatever happens to pop into his head either to provoke a reaction or just because, but he is also generally very reactionary and emotional, wearing his feelings quite evidently on his sleeve. He is much less candid when it comes to actual displays of emotion and VULNERABILITY, so he tries to hide things like loneliness, fear of failure and rejection, his desire for affection, and SENSITIVITY with a NONCHALANT, slightly caricaturized version of himself, whereas things like envy, jealousy, or other unspoken feelings are guarded behind COMPETITIVENESS and rivalry, often still in plain sight but filed down just enough for his true intentions not to be totally obvious. Even when he is being serious or SINCERE he'll usually do so in a casual, flippant way as if it's no big deal, preemptively trivializing the matter even if it means a lot to him in an effort to guard his own feelings. Because of this, naturally, he can come across as a lot more SHALLOW than he really is, though that is obviously somewhat by design. Theoretically, the more flippant he is, the less people will read too much into anything he says or does, and the less they might assume he'll be affected by things said or done to him. By the same token, they also get used to the ways he does show his sincere feelings, even if it's not so much in words; Reggie's capacity for offering comfort tends not to be too touchy-feely or dripping in sentiment, sometimes even couched beneath a thin layer of tough love, but he's fiercely LOYAL and SUPPORTIVE. If he likes someone he will fight for them, be there for them to do whatever he needs to do to get them through the worst, whether or not he's also been wronged (he'll go even harder if he has, but still go pretty hard regardless), and/or to keep them company even if that involves just talking about dumb, easy topics to take their mind off their troubles. He does his best for the people he cares about, but often goes too far, getting into or making trouble thanks to his IMPULSIVE and RECKLESS nature. Despite his assertive, BOSSY personality, he's much better suited to following than he is to leading, since when he does decide to be ambitious he becomes a DETERMINED force of nature, one that even he has trouble controlling unless someone else is there to help him channel it in the right direction, toward the right cause; he's most functional when other people are there to help make decisions for him. He's a very "actions speak louder than words" kind of guy, in no small part likely thanks to his parents, who come across as strict and holding higher expectations of him than he always can meet; if they're proud of him he'll probably feel it more than he'll hear about it, whereas if they're disappointed he'll hear about it and feel it. Literally in some cases, as his father is periodically physically abusive. But while he very clearly does have insecurities, Reggie's behavior is for the most part not driven by them (aside from those that drive his overly competitive tendencies), but rather uses his CONFIDENCE to aggressively overcompensate for them. Being attractive, reasonably popular, reasonably wealthy, and one of Riverdale High's best athletes (and current captain of the football team), he naturally has quite a lot to be confident about, and it influences how he can engage with others, and with life, with such seemingly effortless OBNOXIOUSNESS. For the most part, Reggie can afford to not really care what people think about him, because individual opinion does little or nothing to threaten his status. He's also extremely desperate for validation from the people he wants to like him or approve of him, be they his parents (or other respected authority figures), his close friends, prospective romantic partners/people he has a crush on, and/or anyone he otherwise wants to impress. Stranger or random losers, though? He couldn't care less. Unlike a lot of "bullies," Reggie is not that easy to bother or provoke. He's more of a DOUCHEY class clown-type, the Jerk Friend™, than a bully; the worst he tends to do is throw around casual insults or rude comments in passing, but he doesn't usually seek out regular victims to aggressively torment on a consistent basis. If he's harassing anyone then there's always a bigger rivalry at play there, and it's never someone who can't fight back and defend themselves just as well. He's STUBBORN to a fault and can get more deliberately vicious if he feels actively offended or slighted and gets defensive as a result, but senseless violent bullying for the hell of it isn't his MO. Not that he's one to shy away from a fight, because he does have a pretty easily tripped temper, but if provoked or when defending himself, not just frivolously. That said, he's very easy to put in his place with the right kind of push back, at which point he'll acquiesce and submit to the tougher person or superior leader. Because of his position in life and in school, "coasting" as he is, Reggie rarely has to think about his own identity too deeply, let alone what he wants to do or become after high school and apart from whatever his parents want for him, when he can no longer define himself more by his current status rather his own self, talents, and accomplishments. Since most people don't consider that someone as ARROGANT as him might ever struggle with his identity, have something of an INFERIORITY COMPLEX, or any other difficulty with general inadequacy, rejection, and not measuring up to expectations, Reggie usually gets away with it, too-- he'd certainly hate to validate that notion, hence why he puts in so much effort into making himself seem like an insensitive, annoying clown who brushes off anything remotely serious, feelings included except ANGER and HUMOR. (So it's really no wonder why many of his insecurities can become such self-fulfilling prophecies.) Ultimately, though, he's not a bad or a hateful person. Because of Reggie's RESILIENCE to be himself (whatever that means)and do whatever he wants (at least within a broader comfort zone), he has no qualms hanging out with nearly anyone, not just his jock friends and cheerleaders, but also people more on the fringes of popularity, "coolness," or other clear clique definition that one might normally assume would put them at odds with someone like him. He loves to drink and party and hang out with people, and can be unsurprisingly fun company (for a good time, call Reggie Mantle); not that even his friends still won't be subject to petty jabs or "in good fun" ribbing on occasion, but Reggie generally isn't shy to also show them support and affection, or heap the people he likes with compliments. He may lead with his borderline antagonistic, COMBATIVE personality, but Reggie more often than not tends to have good or at least harmless intentions, and his heart is usually in the right place.
